Are the Titans Superbowl bound?

Has a moment of sheer genius from the Titan’s front office this offseason lead to the start of one of the most unlikely stories in recent NFL history? Since Mariota has been handed the starting job and remained unchallenged, the future was always been dictated on a recurring hope that he could prove that he was the starter many felt he could be. Heading into his three year in the job, Jon Robinson has rolled the dice made the big offseason signing of Ryan Tannehill. A veteran in search of a team that would welcome his mediocre quarterbacking just like Miami had done so for multiple years. And thus started the beginning of a magical tale.

Yeah so I am ripping the piss a nice bit. Obviously, I don’t think beating the Browns will lead to a Superbowl. Or even a successful season but I do think bringing in Tannehill was beneficial. It provided Mariota with something he has been missing: the possibility of being benched or let go. Personally, I believe it is important to have this competition there no matter who the player is (we can look at Brian Hoyer pushing Tom Brady for several off seasons seasons). Against the Browns, Mariota threw for 248 yards, 3 TDs and 0 interceptions. He rushed for a further 24 yards. In truth, he looked shaky in the first half but settled in the second when the Titans run game took over. Consistency has been the biggest issue with his career to date though. He needs to follow up with a big performance against the Colts.

The biggest factor in the victory was the defence never allowed the Browns to settle.Cameron Wake made a nuisance of himself up front. Malcolm Butler, Kevin Byard amd Logan Ryan all got their names on the end of a Baker Mayfield interception. They completed shut down the Brown’s passing game. This defence will turn some heads this year and Jeffery Simmons is yet to return, the Titans number 1 pick from the 2019 draft. Speaking of draft picks, A.J Brown proved he could play a capable number 2 wide receiver role behind Corey Davis. He made a few big plays and lead the team in receiving yards. With Humphrey and Walker also offer options on offense and Taylor Lewan to return after his 4 game ban, there is potential for the team to make the playoffs this year. But for the fifth year in a row, the need for Mariota to make the jump to a consistent QB is the deciding factor. Is it time to give up on that dream and look to Tannehill? Hopefully not.
